Teen Electrocuted in Ukhrul, FIR Filed Alleging Negligence

A grave electrocution incident involving a 14-year-old boy in Manipurโ€™s Ukhrul district has brought renewed scrutiny on the maintenance of high-voltage power infrastructure in the region.

Ngammeikhai R. Shimray sustained severe injuries on the morning of April 22, 2026, after reportedly coming into contact with a live 33 KV transmission line near Langdang Village at around 10:15 AM. The boy, a resident of Rarsomtang in Phungreitang East, suffered critical burn injuries to his face, head, and feet, and is currently undergoing treatment at Ukhrul District Hospital.

A complaint lodged by his elder brother, Ngachonshang R. Shimray, alleges that the transmission line, maintained by the Manipur State Power Company Limited (MSPCL), was hanging at a low height, approximately four feet above the ground, posing a serious threat to public safety. The complaint terms the incident a result of gross negligence, recklessness, and failure of duty on the part of those responsible for maintaining the line.

Following the complaint, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered at Ukhrul Police Station on April 24, 2026. Authorities are expected to initiate an investigation into the circumstances leading to the incident, including possible lapses in safety compliance and maintenance protocols. The case has once again spotlighted concerns over infrastructure oversight in remote areas, with calls for accountability and urgent corrective measures to prevent similar incidents. The complainant has urged swift and impartial action to ensure that responsibility is fixed and public safety is not further compromised.
