The Mongkot Chepu Village Authority and Zalengbung Village Authority has extended its full support to the demand put forward by WCKCSOs for the merger of Kuki villages in Ukhrul district with Kangpokpi district, as a necessary step toward ensuring the safety and security of the community.

The press release issued by Mongkot Chepu Village Authority stated that “following the earlier incidents of violence targeting Kuki villages in the region, Mongkot Chepu village came under attack from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM on 24th April, 2026. The assault took place despite the presence of security forces stationed in the area.

“The attacks resumed again at approximately 4:50 PM, reflecting a pattern of sustained and coordinated aggression against the village. These repeated incidents underscore the serious security challenges faced by vulnerable communities in the region.

“As the attack on Mongkot Chepu Continued around 6:30 AM on April 25, 2026, villagers were again left in fear for their lives while being falsely accused of initiating the firing due to misattributed supersonic bullets used by Tangkhul militants.

“While security forces are deployed on the ground, it is evident that they have not been granted sufficient authority and operational mandate by the state government to effectively intervene and prevent such attacks. This lack of empowerment has contributed to the continued insecurity faced by the Kuki population.

“In the face of these repeated attacks and in the absence of timely and decisive intervention, the village volunteers of Mongkot Chepu were compelled to retaliate in self-defense to protect their homes and their people.

“In light of the ongoing situation, Mongkot Chepu village extends its full support to the demand put forward by WCKCSOs for the merger of Kuki villages in Ukhrul district with Kangpokpi district, as a necessary step toward ensuring the safety and security of the community.

“Mongkot Chepu village remains resolute in its commitment to defend its people and its land with all that it has” stated the statement issued by the Village Authority, Mongkot Chepu.

The Village Authority Zalenbung in a press release stated that “as part of their series of attacks on Kuki villages from multiple locations by the NSCN-EF, Zalenbung village came under sustained assault from this outfit based in Thawai. The attack continued from 5:45. PM on 24th April, 2026, till 7:00 AM 25th April, 2026 undeterred by the presence of security forces in the area.

“The security forces deployed in the region appear to lack adequate authority from the state government to intervene effectively. As the protection of our village and our people is our fundamental responsibility, we were compelled to retaliate in self-defense.

“In light of the impunity with which Tangkhul militants launched a full-scale attack on Mulam and Shongphel villages, and subsequently escalated their aggression to other villages such as Zalenbung, Shangkai, and Mongkot Chepu, it is evident that the government has failed in its duty to ensure the safety and security of the Kuki population in Ukhrul.

“Therefore, Zalenbung village expresses its full support for the demand put forward by WCKCSOs for the merger of Kuki villages in Ukhrul district with Kangpokpi district.

“We remain resolute in our commitment to defend our villages and our people with all that we have” added the press release issue by Village Authority, Zalenbung.
