Assam Rifles Join Hands For Green Campaign In Ukhrul

In a major collaborative push, a specialized plantation and water conservation awareness program was organized at the Somsai Garrison in collaboration with the Ukhrul Forest Division, led by DFO, Laishram Gitla, along with local NGO VVD for spring rejuvenation initiatives.

The initiative highlighted integrated efforts towards afforestation, spring-source conservation and ground water recharge. The program was also participated by Brigadier Amit Kumar Sharma (Commander, 10 Sector Assam Rifles). Lt. Col. Shiv Bahadur Singh and CO of 18 Assam Rifles Col. Manish Kadiyan.

Speaking at the occasion, Laishram Gitla (IFS), DFO of Ukhrul stated that “it is an absolute honor to stand before you today at Somsai on this double occasion of profound significance: World Environment Day and the launch of Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam (EKMKN 3.0).

“When we think of the Assam Rifles, we think of courage. We think of unwavering grit. Anyone can plant a tree, but a soldier knows the value of survival. I urge you not just to plant during EKMKN 3.0, but to adopt these saplings, ensuring they grow into a dense canopy.”

She further added “years from now, when your posting in Ukhrul is over and you move on to serve elsewhere, the standard you carried will go with you. But the trees you plant today will remain. They will breathe life into these hills, provide shade to the next generation, and stand as a permanent testimony that the 10 Sector Assam Rifles came, protected, and healed this land.

“Let us march forward into this green campaign with the same zeal, discipline, and victorious spirit that defines your glorious history.

“When you plant a sapling under Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam, you are planting it in honor of your mother. As soldiers, many of you serve thousands of miles away from your homes and your mothers. Let this soil of Ukhrul witness your love for her. Every tree you plant and nurture here becomes a living monument of a soldier’s love for his mother and his Motherland.

“Just as your mothers nurtured you to become the brave defenders of today, you must nurture these saplings to become the massive shields of tomorrow

“The Forest Department cannot save Ukhrul’s environment alone. We need force multipliers, and there is no force more disciplined, dedicated, and capable than the Assam Rifles. Your role is pivotal in three distinct ways:

“Your footprint in the remote corners of Ukhrul is unmatched. By remaining vigilant against illegal logging, poaching, and forest fires, you act as the ultimate deterrent to environmental criminals.

“When the local youth see a jawan with a rifle in one hand and a sapling in the other, it sends a powerful message. You inspire the community to take pride in their natural heritage” added Laishram Gitla.

During the programme, plantation of various types of tree sapling was carried out at Somsai.
