The Research Centre for Folklore and Cultural Heritage (RECFACH), in collaboration with the Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS), celebrated World Folklore Day on Saturday at the DRDA Hall, Mini Secretariat Complex, Ukhrul, with an aim to highlight the importance of preserving and promoting folklore, traditional knowledge and cultural heritage.

The celebration brought together scholars, educators, students, cultural practitioners and members of the community to observe the significance of folklore as an important expression of cultural identity and collective memory.

The programme began with an opening prayer by Prof. Ringkahao Horam, Principal, Pettigrew College, Ukhrul, followed by the welcome and introduction and the presidential address by Dr. Sochanphy A. Shimray, President of RECFACH.

A folk song presentation by Pettigrew College, Ukhrul formed part of the cultural segment, showcasing the continuing relevance of traditional artistic expressions among the younger generation. The programme also featured a keynote address by Peter Horam, Vice Principal, Pettigrew College, Ukhrul.

Another major attraction of the celebration was the presentation of Khararchan, a folk narrative/drama, by Sentinel College, Ukhrul. The performance provided an engaging representation of folklore through dramatic expression and highlighted the role of oral narratives in transmitting cultural values and community memory.

The celebration also included short speeches by Dr. Horeisung Khamrang, Editorial Board Member, RECFACH, and Ramreichan Keishing, President of Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong. A further cultural presentation, Saotheila (folk games), was presented by St. Joseph College, Ukhrul, bringing traditional recreational practices into the celebration.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Makanmi Horam, Secretary, RECFACH, followed by the closing prayer by Wungpam Kasar, Director, Tangkhul Tui Ngashan Masanshim-TNL

The World Folklore Day celebration underscored the need for sustained efforts to document, preserve, research and transmit the rich folklore traditions of the Tangkhul community. Through academic engagement, cultural performances and participation of young people, the event sought to create greater awareness of folklore as a living component of cultural heritage rather than merely a record of the past.

The joint initiative of RECFACH and TKS reflects the growing importance of collaborative efforts among researchers, educational institutions, cultural organisations and the community in safeguarding and promoting Tangkhul folklore for future generations.
