I recall receiving an unexpected call in the mid-1990s from Uncle Niketu Iralu. He commended me for a statement I had made in a national newspaper. It took me a moment to realise that it was a statement made during the height of the Naga-Kuki conflict in Manipur.
The statement was succinct and clear: “Nagas and Kukis must engage in a dialogue to resolve the protracted conflict…” At that time, Nagas under the aegis of the Naga Students’ Union Delhi (NSUD) had organised a peaceful rally in Jantar Mantar, New Delhi.
Although we had never met, I was informed that he had obtained my telephone number from a mutual family friend in Kohima.
In the current circumstances faced by Manipur, history appears to be repeating itself. This situation is reminiscent of the challenges faced three decades ago; a period that remains highly relevant in the present social and political climate.
As an advocate for peace and a conscience keeper, Uncle Niketu always considered dialogue and reconciliation paramount above all, and this principled and moral stand is particularly relevant in the current situation.
The adage that time is the best healer holds. However, regrettably, the Naga-Kuki conflict has once again erupted before the wounds have fully healed.
Nagas have evolved significantly since the 20th century and have successfully navigated numerous crises.
Nagas face dual challenges, both internal and external. The latter requires political will to engage with other stakeholders to find a peaceful resolution for coexistence with other communities in the northeastern region. The former necessitates introspection among the Nagas to firmly resolve that peaceful negotiation is the only path forward.
Uncle Niketu was a remarkable individual with an impeccable character, a warm and cheerful disposition, and an intense interest in intellectual discourse.
A moralist, social and political reformer, he has made a remarkable contribution to making a better society to live in.
May his legacy continue to inspire the young Nagas to uphold peace and reconciliation with honesty and integrity. As we honour his life and celebrate his well-lived existence, may the younger generation commit to carrying forward his vision.
In an eulogy message, the wife of Uncle Niketu Iralu concluded with a quote:
“Nagas must learn to love one another, learn to forgive one another, then this will open up endless opportunities.”
“In him, the Naga story found a witness who believed that peace was not an abstract ideal but a lived discipline, nurtured through dialogue, humility, and courage.”
