Assam Rifles Excessive Use of Force Injures 22 Women in Ukhrul

22 Naga women were severely injured at a clash with Assam Rifles at Finch Corner and Shokvao Village, Ukhrul District, Manipur.

The injured women have been brought to the District Hospital, Ukhrul and are undergoing medical treatment.

It is worth mentioning that the Katho Area has raised strong objection to the establishment of a temporary outpost by the Assam Rifles at New Heaven without consulting or informing or obtaining prior permission from the concerned Village Authority. The CSOs from the Katho area have been protesting since yesterday for the immediate withdrawal of the Assam Rifles personnel stationed at New Heaven.

Sources informed that at around 4:00 pm, the Assam Rifles dismantled the barricade at Finch Corner, resorted to blank fire and tear gas and assaulted the women volunteers.

The same team of Assam Rifles proceeded towards Shokvao. They reached Shokvao at around 4:30pm and started assaulting the womenfolk who were guarding the village. And at around 4:30pm, the Assam Rifles personnel stationed at New Heaven resorted to indiscriminate firing. However, there was no report of assault or injury at New Heaven.

A lady from Shokvao undergoing treatment at District Hospital Ukhrul narrating the incident stated that the Assam Rifles personnel acted in a barbaric and gruesome way while engaging with the volunteers and resorted to use of brute force. They started firing bullets and tear gas. The Assam Riffles personnel started beating the women folk with their electric baton. They did not spare women who were in their house. Some received multiple injuries in their bodies. They did not even spare the old women who fell on the ground. Around 4/5 AR in group resorted to beating the old and young women of Shokvao.

The womenfolk from Tangkhul Naga community have been guarding the Highways and inter village connecting roads since the violence between the Nagas and the Kukis erupted on 7 February 2026.

This is not the first case with frequent clashes between Assam Rifles and Naga women in the recent months in Ukhrul and Kamjong districts of Manipur.
