International Day of Old Age Persons was observed today in Ukhrul with the theme “ The age of longevity: Rethinking systems of Lives” at TTA (Tangkhul Theological Association) Hall, Hamleikhong with over 150 attendees from different parts of Ukhrul district.

The program was organised by Ukhrul District Headquarters Kharar Long in collaboration with District Social Welfare Office, Ukhrul and Institute of Goodwill Foundation, Ukhrul.

Gracing the event as the resource person of the program, Dr. Nelson Vashum who is also the advisor the TKL, stated that “it is very much important for the society to take care of the old age persons with utmost respect and at the same time, providing their needs. They are people with different experiences from life which is a priceless lesson. They are the ones who  can provide tips and information to the future generation for longevity of life.”

He also stated that the main factors affecting the longevity of life is the use of tobacco either by smoking or chewing, gorging on food and eating too much of red meat. Also encouraging the old age persons to bring changes in the society as being the most respected citizens of the society, he further appealed to the authorities concerned to provide the necessary facilities for the old age persons as they are the parents and most in needed person of today.

As part of the celebration, the District Social Welfare Office handed over Old Age Pension Card to 43 individuals. Cultural troops from different localities presented folk songs and also gifts were presented to all the attendees as a token of appreciation.
