The Nature of Consciousness

For my seventh-semester, Department of Political Science students, Standhope Shimray and Milan Kuwar

Every journey of discovery begins with a question. These pages were shaped by conversations shared in a spirit of curiosity, patience and a sincere desire to understand.

Standhope and Milan, thank you for your curiosity, your willingness to question and your patience in listening to my thoughts as they gradually found their shape. Many of the reflections in this work became clearer because of our conversations. I shall always remember our shared search for understanding with gratitude.

Before you finish reading this sentence, something has already happened. Light reflected from these words has entered your eyes. Your brain has transformed patterns of light into language and language into meaning. Above all, you know that you understand what you are reading. This awareness accompanies every moment of our lives. We rarely pause to notice it because it has always been there. Yet it gives rise to one of humanity’s oldest and most challenging questions: What is consciousness?

People have wrestled with this question for thousands of years. Long before telescopes revealed distant galaxies or microscopes uncovered the hidden world of cells, human beings wondered how thoughts arise, why memories endure, how emotions shape experience and what it means to know that one exists. Each generation inherited these questions, examined them through the knowledge available to its time and passed them to the next. The vocabulary changed, discoveries accumulated and methods became more rigorous, but the central question remained.

Modern science has transformed our understanding of the natural world. It has traced the history of the universe across nearly 13.8 billion years, explained the evolution of life through natural selection and revealed the complexity of the human brain. These achievements have answered questions that once seemed beyond imagination. At the same time, they have shown that consciousness remains one of the most demanding subjects of inquiry. We know far more about the brain than any previous generation, yet we continue to ask how physical processes are accompanied by subjective experience.

Consciousness occupies a distinctive place within human knowledge because it is both the subject we investigate and the means through which investigation becomes possible. Every scientific observation, every philosophical argument and every mathematical proof is recognised by a conscious mind. This does not mean that the universe depends upon consciousness. Cosmology, geology and evolutionary biology provide compelling evidence that the universe existed long before human beings appeared. It means that every human encounter with reality is experienced through consciousness. We seek to understand the world through the very capacity we are trying to understand.

Careful distinctions are therefore essential. Consciousness is not simply wakefulness. A person may be awake while paying little attention to the surrounding world, and dreams remind us that vivid experiences can occur during sleep. Consciousness is not identical to intelligence. A machine may solve complex problems, recognise patterns and generate fluent language without demonstrating subjective experience. Intelligence concerns the capacity to process information. Consciousness concerns the presence of experience itself.

A similar distinction exists between consciousness and self-consciousness. Consciousness allows us to see, hear, remember, imagine and feel. Self-consciousness enables us to recognise ourselves as individuals with personal histories, beliefs and aspirations. It allows us to examine our own thoughts, question our own assumptions and reflect upon our own existence. The extent to which other animals possess comparable forms of self-awareness continues to be investigated through careful scientific research.

Perhaps the most distinctive feature of consciousness is its subjective nature. A neuroscientist can describe the activity of the visual cortex with great precision, yet such a description does not convey what it is like to watch the colours of an evening sky. A chemist can identify the molecules responsible for the fragrance of a flower, yet the analysis differs from the experience of its scent. A physician can explain the biological processes associated with grief, yet no description fully captures the feeling of losing someone deeply loved. Scientific explanation and lived experience illuminate different aspects of the same reality.

This insight has shaped intellectual traditions across the world. Greek philosophers explored the relationship between mind and body. Indian philosophical traditions developed rigorous analyses of awareness, perception and the self. Chinese thinkers examined consciousness in relation to moral cultivation and harmonious living. Later European philosophers investigated knowledge, identity and experience. Their conclusions often differed, yet they shared a conviction that understanding consciousness is inseparable from understanding ourselves.

Modern biology, neuroscience and psychology have added new perspectives to this long conversation. They demonstrate that conscious experience depends closely upon the functioning of the brain and reveal the relationships among perception, memory, attention, emotion and behaviour. At the same time, they remind us that no single discipline answers every question consciousness presents. Biological mechanisms, psychological processes, philosophical analysis and lived experience each contribute to a fuller understanding.

Consciousness also gives human life its distinctive character. Through it, landscapes become places of beauty, music becomes consolation, words become ideas and experience becomes memory. Knowledge grows because conscious minds observe, compare, question and learn. Culture develops because experiences can be shared through language and preserved across generations. In this way, consciousness connects the natural world with the human world of ideas, values and institutions.

The history of civilisation may therefore be read as humanity’s continuing effort to transform experience into understanding. Every scientific theory, philosophical insight, work of art and moral tradition reflects that effort. The study of consciousness reaches beyond neuroscience and philosophy because it touches every field that seeks to understand human life. It asks how physical processes become experience, how experience becomes knowledge and how knowledge shapes the societies we build. Those questions endure because they arise from the very capacity through which every other question is asked.

Because consciousness lies at the centre of every attempt to understand ourselves, people have examined it for thousands of years. Long before psychology and neuroscience became independent disciplines, the study of consciousness belonged to philosophy, religion and early attempts to understand the natural world. Ancient Greek philosophers explored the relationship between mind, body and reason. Indian philosophical traditions examined awareness, perception, memory and the self through logical inquiry and disciplined introspection. Chinese thinkers considered consciousness in relation to moral character, self-cultivation and social harmony. Although their conclusions differed, each tradition recognised that understanding consciousness was essential to understanding human life.

The scientific revolution introduced a different way of investigating these questions. Observation, experiment and evidence gradually became the principal means of studying nature. During the nineteenth century, advances in biology, physiology and psychology began to connect mental life with the nervous system. Another important step came with Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, which placed human beings within the history of life rather than outside it. Consciousness increasingly came to be studied not only as a philosophical question but also as a biological phenomenon that emerged through evolution.

The twentieth century brought major advances in the study of the brain. Scientists discovered how neurons communicate through electrical and chemical signals and identified regions involved in language, memory, vision, hearing and movement. Later, techniques such as electroencephalography and functional magnetic resonance imaging enabled researchers to observe patterns of brain activity associated with perception, attention and decision making. These findings established that conscious experience depends closely upon the functioning of the brain. Brain injury, neurological disease, anaesthesia and sleep all alter consciousness in consistent and measurable ways.

An important distinction, however, must be preserved. Identifying the brain processes associated with consciousness is not the same as explaining why those processes are accompanied by subjective experience. Researchers have made substantial progress in identifying the neural correlates of consciousness, the patterns of brain activity that consistently accompany conscious states. Why these processes are experienced from the inside remains an open scientific and philosophical question. Recognising this distinction reflects the present state of knowledge and the continuing effort to extend it.

As evidence accumulated, several theories were proposed to explain how consciousness might arise from brain activity. “Global Workspace Theory” suggests that information becomes conscious when it is made available across multiple brain systems, allowing perception, memory, reasoning and decision-making to operate together. Integrated Information Theory argues that consciousness is related to the degree to which information within a system is unified. “Higher-order” theories propose that a mental state becomes conscious when it is represented by another mental state. Recurrent processing theories emphasise the role of feedback connections within the brain. Each theory accounts for part of the available evidence, and each continues to be tested. At present, none has gained universal acceptance.

The study of consciousness has also expanded beyond human beings. Research indicates that many animal species possess different forms and degrees of conscious awareness. Mammals and birds display learning, memory, social behaviour and problem-solving that extend beyond simple reflexes. Great apes have shown evidence of self-recognition in mirror tests under certain conditions. Elephants display behaviour associated with social loss. Dolphins communicate and cooperate in highly organised ways. Corvids use tools, solve problems and plan for future needs. These findings do not suggest that animal consciousness is identical to human consciousness. They indicate that conscious experience is likely to exist in different forms across the animal kingdom.

Evolution provides a framework for understanding why consciousness may have developed. Organisms capable of integrating information, remembering past events, anticipating danger and adapting their behaviour were more likely to survive and reproduce. Over millions of years, natural selection favoured increasingly sophisticated nervous systems. Human consciousness emerged within this long evolutionary history, while language, symbolic thought and culture greatly expanded its possibilities.

Memory gives continuity to conscious life. Without memory, experience would consist of disconnected moments. We recognise ourselves as the same individual because the brain continually relates present experience to remembered experience. Psychological research also shows that memory is reconstructive rather than a perfect record. Each act of remembering involves interpretation as well as recall.

Attention is equally central to consciousness. At any moment the brain receives far more sensory information than can enter awareness. Attention selects what is most relevant according to context, purpose and current goals. This explains why we can become absorbed in reading while scarcely noticing surrounding conversations or immediately recognise a familiar voice in a crowded room. Consciousness depends not only upon perception but also upon the selective direction of awareness.

Another question continues to engage researchers. The brain processes vision, hearing, touch, language, emotion and memory through different networks, yet conscious experience ordinarily appears as a unified whole. We experience a single world rather than separate streams of information. Explaining how this unity arises remains one of the central questions in contemporary neuroscience.

The study of consciousness reflects the character of scientific inquiry itself. Each discovery answers some questions while raising others. Knowledge advances through observation, evidence and the continual testing of ideas. Research over the past century has transformed our understanding of the brain, yet consciousness continues to invite investigation because it stands at the meeting point of biology, psychology and philosophy. From this point, the discussion naturally moves beyond the mechanisms of consciousness to its significance for human life, society and civilisation.

If science seeks to explain how consciousness arises, another question follows naturally: what does consciousness make possible? The answer reaches far beyond biology. Consciousness enables human beings to remember the past, imagine futures that do not yet exist, compare alternatives before acting and give meaning to experience. Through these capacities, it becomes one of the foundations of knowledge, morality, culture and civilisation.

Language offers one of the clearest examples. Spoken words are patterns of sound, and written words are marks on a page. Their significance appears only when they are understood by conscious minds. Through language, one person’s experience can be communicated to another. Knowledge is preserved across generations, disagreements become opportunities for learning and ideas continue to develop long after their authors have gone. Every library, school and university reflects humanity’s ability to share understanding across time.

Memory gives continuity to individuals, while culture gives continuity to societies. Every generation inherits discoveries, beliefs, customs and institutions from those who came before. Consciousness allows that inheritance to be examined, questioned and improved. Scientific knowledge advances because observations are recorded, tested and corrected. Legal systems endure because principles can be debated and refined. Literature continues to speak across centuries because readers bring new understanding to familiar texts. Civilisation therefore depends not only upon material progress but also upon the ability of conscious minds to preserve and enlarge human knowledge.

Consciousness also gives moral life its importance. Physical events occur throughout nature, but justice, responsibility, compassion and dignity become meaningful where conscious beings recognise the experiences of others. Pain matters because it is experienced. Kindness matters because it changes another person’s experience. Responsibility matters because human beings can consider reasons, make choices and accept the consequences of those choices. Different ethical traditions explain these ideas in different ways, yet all acknowledge the importance of conscious experience in moral life.

Recent advances in artificial intelligence have renewed interest in the study of consciousness. Machines now translate languages, recognise images, assist scientific research and perform tasks that once seemed to require uniquely human intelligence. These achievements demonstrate the power of computation and machine learning. They do not, however, establish that artificial systems possess subjective experience. At present, there is no accepted scientific evidence that today’s artificial intelligence is conscious in the same sense as human beings. Whether conscious artificial systems could one day exist remains an open question that demands careful evidence rather than speculation.

The study of consciousness also reminds us that knowledge has limits. Throughout history, many questions once thought impossible were eventually answered through careful observation and sustained investigation. Others required new concepts before progress became possible. Consciousness may follow a similar path. Future discoveries in neuroscience, psychology, philosophy, cognitive science and computer science will almost certainly refine present theories. Some current explanations may be strengthened, while others may be replaced by better ones. Such change is a normal feature of scientific progress.

This recognition encourages intellectual humility. Humility does not mean abandoning the search for knowledge. It means recognising the difference between established evidence, plausible explanation and unanswered questions. That distinction has guided science throughout its history and continues to guide the study of consciousness. It also encourages dialogue among different fields of knowledge. Neuroscience explains the biological processes that support awareness. Psychology examines perception, learning and behaviour. Philosophy analyses concepts and arguments. History, literature and the arts illuminate the many ways conscious experience is expressed in human life. Together these perspectives provide a broader understanding than any one discipline can offer alone.

The importance of consciousness extends into every area of society. Medicine depends upon understanding pain, awareness and disorders of consciousness. Law considers intention, responsibility and decision-making. Education relies upon attention, memory and understanding. Politics, ethics and public life depend upon citizens who can reason, evaluate evidence and engage in dialogue. The study of consciousness therefore belongs not only to laboratories and universities but also to every institution that seeks to improve human life.

Perhaps the lasting importance of consciousness lies in its capacity to inspire questions. Curiosity has driven every major advance in human knowledge. It has encouraged exploration, challenged accepted beliefs and expanded the boundaries of understanding. Consciousness makes this possible because it allows human beings to examine their own ideas, recognise their mistakes and seek better explanations. The search for consciousness is therefore also a search for clearer knowledge of ourselves.

The history of consciousness is, in many respects, the history of humanity’s attempt to understand its own existence. Science has revealed much about the brain. Philosophy has clarified many of the questions. Psychology has deepened our understanding of behaviour and experience. Much has been learned, and much remains to be discovered. This continuing inquiry reflects the strength of human curiosity and the willingness to follow evidence wherever it leads.

Consciousness is the capacity through which we perceive the world, recognise one another, preserve memory, create knowledge and imagine possibilities beyond the present. It allows experience to become understanding and understanding to become wisdom. To study consciousness is therefore not only to investigate the mind. It is to examine one of the central conditions that make science, culture, morality and civilisation possible. The question that has accompanied humanity for centuries remains open, inviting every generation to continue the search with curiosity, honesty and respect for evidence.

Every generation inherits questions that resist simple answers. Consciousness is one of them. It has remained a subject of inquiry through changing philosophies, scientific revolutions and social transformations because it concerns the one reality that accompanies every human life: experience itself.

The search for consciousness has never belonged to a single discipline. Philosophy asks what consciousness is. Neuroscience investigates the brain processes associated with conscious experience. Psychology examines perception, memory, attention and behaviour. Biology places consciousness within the long history of evolution. History records how different cultures understood the mind, while literature and the arts reveal the many ways human experience can be expressed. Each perspective contributes something important. Together they remind us that no single approach is sufficient on its own.

The history of knowledge offers another lesson. Many questions that once appeared beyond explanation gradually yielded to careful observation, disciplined reasoning and the steady accumulation of evidence. Others remain open because they demand new methods, new ideas or new discoveries. The study of consciousness belongs to this continuing tradition. Its unanswered questions should not discourage inquiry. They invite it.

At its heart, consciousness is more than a subject for scientific investigation or philosophical reflection. It is the condition through which human beings observe the world, recognise one another, preserve memory, create knowledge and imagine possibilities beyond the present. Every scientific discovery first becomes meaningful in a conscious mind. Every work of art begins as an experience before it becomes an object. Every moral decision presupposes the capacity to understand the experiences of others. In this sense, consciousness stands quietly behind many of humanity’s greatest achievements.

There is also a lesson in humility. Human understanding has always been incomplete, and it has always grown through a willingness to question accepted ideas. The history of science is not the history of certainty but the history of careful correction. The same spirit should guide future work on consciousness. Claims should be measured against evidence, conclusions should remain open to revision and curiosity should continue to guide inquiry.

Perhaps this is the lasting value of the question. The study of consciousness does more than deepen our understanding of the mind. It encourages us to examine how we know, why we believe, how we learn and what it means to live as thoughtful human beings. In asking how consciousness arises, we also ask how knowledge becomes possible. In asking how experience is formed, we also ask how meaning enters human life.

The search is therefore unlikely to end. Each generation will inherit new evidence, develop new ideas and ask familiar questions with greater clarity. That continuing conversation is one of the enduring strengths of civilisation. As long as human beings continue to observe, reflect, question and learn, the study of consciousness will remain one of the clearest expressions of humanity’s desire to understand both the universe and itself.
