Phungcham – one of the oldest villages among the Tangkhul Naga community observed a solemn one day Luita Phanat. The planned 5 day festival was cancelled because of the ongoing crisis at Litan Sareikhong, Ukhrul District, Manipur. Instead the Village Chief symbolically evokes the blessing for a good year followed by a day of fasting and prayer.
The seed sowing festival is one of the most important traditional and agricultural festivals of the Tangkhul Naga community. However, this year’s Luita Phanit celebration of Phungcham Village was celebrated in a very different way.
The villagers after cancelling the planned programme, turned the occasion into a day of fasting and prayer for the Litan Sareikhong victims. On Monday, the villagers fast and prayed for ending the crisis at the earliest. They said a prayer for the volunteers and for the leaders.
On Tuesday, the villagers raised funds for the victims and collected Rs. 46899 in cash and other in kinds. “The amount collected will be handed over to the concerned relief committee” stated Tuireising Horam, Headman of Phungcham Village.
