The Joint Tribes’ Council Manipur (Liangmai, Rongmei & Inpui) is all set to observe the 95th Martyrdom Anniversary of the revered freedom fighter, Haipou Jadonang on August 29, 2026, at Tamenglong Headquarters
Born in 1905 at Puiluan (Kambiron) village in Noney District, Haipou Jadonang was a visionary spiritual leader and political activist who championed the cause of an independent “Makam Gwangdi” (Naga Raj) against British colonial rule. Advocating monotheism and social reforms, and organized the Riphen a group of armed youth to resist colonial oppression.
Jadonang was arrested by the British Political Agent J.C. Higgins on February 19, 1931, and hanged on August 29, 1931, at the age of 26 on the banks of the Nambul River in Imphal, on charges of sedition and waging war against the Crown. His movement was carried forward by his disciple, Rani Gaidinliu, who continued the fight for Zeliangrong self-determination.
The commemorative event at Tamenglong Headquarters will features a formal tribute function, floral offerings, cultural programs, and traditional rituals in keeping with previous years. The observance aims to educate the students and youth about Jadonang’s life, vision, and the historic struggle for self-rule.
The observation Committee under the aegis of Joint Tribes Council Manipur has called upon the people of Tamenglong District to participate in large numbers and pay heartfelt respects on 29 August, 2026 (Saturday). Citizens are encouraged to light candles at their homes at dusk as a mark of homage to the departed martyr.
The Committee also appeals to civil society organizations, community leaders, and all well-wishers to extend their support in making this milestone observance meaningful and memorable occasion.
