Sit-In-Protest By The Kukis Against Restriction On Transportation Of Essential Commodities

The Kuki Women Union -Ukhrul staged a Sit-In Protest at Shangkai under the aegis of WCKCSOs- UKHRUL against the humanitarian access crisis for Kuki people in Ukhrul.

The protest will continue till the Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul gives his response by meeting the women at protest and gives a permanent solution.

In this regard, the Kuki CSO Working Committee Ukhrul has submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul on 16 June 2026. The memorandum reads “the Kuki CSOs Working Committee (WCKCSOs)-Ukhrul wishes to place on record its serious concern regarding the continued restriction on transportation of essential commodities to Kuki-Zo inhabited areas in Ukhrul District since the outbreak of the violence.

“A selective economic blockade at Wunghon targeting goods meant for Kuki-Zo areas was repeatedly brought to the notice of the District Administration. However, the issue was addressed only through the dismantling of a temporary shade reportedly used by Tangkhul women bandh enforcers. Such action proved inadequate, as it neither resolved the obstruction nor ensured sustained and secure movement of goods, rendering it neither a genuine nor lasting solution.

“Consequently, village volunteers restricted movement of vehicles at Shangkai on 04/05/2026 and 05/05/2026, following which assurances were extended by the District Administration and Police regarding free movement of goods for all communities without discrimination.

“Despite such assurances, supply remains unequal in practice. While essential commodities-including LPG, fuel, rice, and other necessities-continue to be transported to Tangkhul areas under heavy security escort, Kuki-Zo areas remain dependent on neutral middle-men operating under threats and intimidation.

“In view of the above, WCKCSOs-Ukhrul urges the District Administration to:

1. Ensure uninterrupted and non-discriminatory movement of essential commodities to Kuki-Zo inhabited areas.

2. Provide security escort and administrative facilitation for supply routes where necessary.

3. Take strict action against any obstruction of essential goods, irrespective of affiliation.

4. Establish a credible and permanent mechanism to guarantee equal supply access to all communities.

“In the event that the District Administration fails to put in place an effective and tangible solution to the prevailing issue by 18th June, 2026, WCKCSOs-Ukhrul may be compelled to resort to democratic forms of agitation, including economic blockade along NH-202, to safeguard the interests of the affected population” added the statement issued by Alund Khongsai (Convenor) and Jangkhohao Khongsai (Secretary) of Kuki CSO Working Committee -Ukhrul.
