UNC & ANSAM Appeals for Peace During These Trying Times

The United Naga Council (UNC) and All Naga Students’ Association Manipur (ANSAM) have appealed for peace and to exercise utmost restraint and to steadfastly reject the path of retaliation, provocation, and discord. Let us shun violence, march in unison and support each other during these trying times.

The UNC stated ‘amidst the existential threat and challenges looming in our homeland, the brutal killing of four Naga Army personnel at Hongbei village, Ukhrul District, Manipur on March 28, 2026 had saddened and shattered the Naga people, when unity is most needed. The incident, which has sent shockwaves across the community, is a stark reminder of the need to shun senseless violence amongst brethren.

“The UNC strongly condemns this heinous act of fratricidal killings and demands that the Government of People’s Republic of Nagaland (GPRN) to clarify the circumstances leading to this tragic incident and take immediate action against those responsible persons involved.”

The UNC has appealed to the authorities to ensure that justice is served swiftly by initiating:

– A thorough investigation and clarification on the cause of the incident

– Stern action against the perpetrators

“The Council stands in solidarity with the families of the victims and extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved families. May God help and heal the anguish of the bereaved. May our valiant heroes rest in peace!

“A striking maxim from R. Suisa; “The Nagas are politically obtuse. They do not understand the right thing at the right time. They are not united at the right time for the right cause. If such situations prevail in the Naga Land, the Nagas will fight amongst themselves to finish themselves” is being quoted herein for reminders to all of us, so that we stand together in the right perspective as one people, to secure our future.

“We urge all sections of society to maintain restraint, peace and harmony, and work towards healing and reconciliation. May God grant sanity to avert from self-destruction forthwith..Together, let us shun violence, march in unison and support each other during these trying times” added the press release issued by NG. Lorho, President of UNC.

The press release issued by TH. Angteshang, President, ANSAM and Maring Isaac Charenamei, General Secretary, ANSAM stated “in this unbecoming and grievous hour, as our homeland stands encircled by manifold trials and uncertainties, the brutal and unconscionable killing of four Naga Army personnel at Hongbei village under WTR on March 28, 2026, has cast a pall of sorrow and indignation across our land. This tragic occurrence has not only bereaved families and shaken our Naga populace, but has also wounded the very conscience of our people. At a time when unity, sobriety, and collective resolve are indispensable, such a happening is profoundly ill-timed indeed and inimical to the larger aspirations and shared destiny of the Naga people.

“The All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM), in the strongest and most unequivocal terms, condemns this heinous act of consanguineous bloodletting violence. Violence amongst brethren is a grievous aberration that corrodes the moral fabric of our society and imperils the foundations upon which our collective future must stand. We assert, with unwavering clarity, that no cause, however conceived, can justify the spilling of kindred blood. The Association call upon the competent authorities to undertake an immediate, thorough, and transparently conducted inquiry into the incident, ensuring that the truth is neither obscured nor compromised. Justice must be delivered with firmness, impartiality, and due expedition, so that those culpable are held fully accountable under the law.

“Yet, beyond condemnation and calls for accountability, this moment demands something greater of us all. This is, above all, an earnest and urgent Appeal for Peace. We call upon every section of Naga society, leaders, civil bodies, youth, and all concerns to exercise utmost restraint and to steadfastly reject the path of retaliation, provocation, and discord. Let not anguish descend into anger, nor grief into further division. For history has taught us, with painful clarity, that cycles of violence beget only deeper fractures and enduring suffering. At this critical juncture, we must rise above impulses that seek to divide us, and instead anchor ourselves in the higher virtues of wisdom, restraint, and unity. The strength of a people is not measured by their capacity for vengeance, but by their ability to uphold peace even in the face of provocation.

“ANSAM stands in solemn and full solidarity with the bereaved families, whose loss is both profound and irreparable. We extend our deepest condolences and offer our prayers that the Almighty grants them fortitude in this hour of unspeakable grief. May the departed souls be granted eternal repose. Let this moment serve not as a point of rupture, but as a turning point, a moment of collective introspection and moral reckoning. We must not allow disunity to define us, nor permit violence to dictate the course of our shared future. Rather, let us recommit ourselves to the principles of peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and unwavering unity.”

“We fervently urge all concerned to act with sagacity and responsibility, to preserve calm, and to contribute actively towards the restoration of trust and harmony within our society. Let truth prevail unfettered and unassailable and let justice be pursued without fear or favour. The path ahead may be fraught with challenges, yet it is only through unity of purpose and steadfast adherence to peace that we can secure a future worthy of our collective aspirations. Let us, therefore, stand together not as a fractured nation, but as one people bound by shared history, shared struggles, and a shared hope.

“In unity lies our strength. Misapprehension and internecine enmity within our own ranks remain the most ruinous of forces. When brethren descend into fratricidal strife unto death, it is the outsider who inherits our patrimony. In peace lies our future” added the ANSAM statement.
