The Naga Village Chiefs Federation Manipur today reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding the rich heritage and customary practices of the hill tribes, in light of recent correspondence addressed to the President of India regarding traditional leadership structures.

In a press release issued by SA. Ramnganing, President of Naga Village Chiefs’ Federation (NCVF) stated that, ‘the Federation acknowledges the ongoing discourse surrounding governance in Manipur’s hill regions, which draws upon various legislative frameworks enacted by the Government of Manipur and India. These frameworks, while aimed at fostering administrative uniformity, have prompted reflections on the enduring value of ancient tribal customs that have guided communities for generations, long before external influences shaped the region’s landscape.

“The Federation believes that the traditional chieftainship system represents a vital pillar of tribal cultural identity, rooted in principles of community harmony, sustainable resource management, and equitable decision-making. These practices, honed over centuries, continue to serve as a cornerstone for social cohesion and have adapted responsibly to contemporary challenges. We encourage all stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue to ensure that any changes respect the diversity and historical context of our traditions.

“Preserving these customary institutions does not undermine national progress but rather complements it by promoting inclusive governance. As an organization rooted in preserving the cultural and social fabric of Naga communities in Manipur, the Naga Village Chiefs’ Federation remains dedicated to collaborating with government bodies and community organizations to explore pathways that honor both legal frameworks and indigenous heritage.”
