The ongoing “Trade Embargo” in Nagas Areas by United Maga Council, that begins from 8 September 2025 is officially lifted from 6pm of Thursday.
The decision was taken during an Emergency Presidential Council Meeting held at its Council’s Office, Tahamzam, Senapati on Thursday.
The press statement issued by H . James Hau, Publicity & Information Secretary of United Naga Council stated that “on receipt of the Government of Manipur letter No. H-802/6/2025-HD-HD dated 10th September, 2025 for resumption of tripartite meeting of the United Naga Council (UNC) with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Government of India and the Government of Manipur on the issue of abrogation of Free Movement Regime and Border Fencing along the imaginary Indo-Mynmar Border in Naga areas, an Emergency Presidential Council Meeting (EPCM) of the United Naga Council was held on the 11th September, 2025 at Tahamzam.
“The EPC appreciated the Government’s acknowledgement of the past engagement of the UNC and the MHA and also their confirmation of receipt of Memoranda/representation on the above issues. The assurance of the Government that there will be prior consultation with the UNC and other stakeholders before the stated works are taken up was well received.
“In view of the above, the Presidential Council resolved to suspend the ongoing Trade Embargo in Naga Areas temporarily with effect from 6.00 pm of September 11, 2025.
“The UNC through this statement places on record its appreciation to all the Tribe, Women, Student & Youth Organizations and the Naga public in general for their support and solidarity towards the effective observation of the Trade Embargo.”
The Chief Secretary of Manipur on 10 September, 2025 has written a letter to the President of the United Naga Council for holding dialogue on a border fencing issue and also appealed for any form of agitation in this regard may be withdrawn in the larger public interest.
The United Naga Council demands:
1. Free, Prior and Informed consent of the Naga people must be obtained for any project affecting the Nagas and their land.
2. No imposition of movement restrictions along the so called international Indo-Myanmar border.
3. Stop detention, harassment and surveillance activities along the imaginary border areas within the Naga homeland.
4. Abrogate the Border fencing project across the Naga homeland.
5. Earnestly pursue the INDO- NAGA peace process and focus on early settlement.
