In the run-up to the celebration of Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas on 15 November 2025, commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of tribal freedom fighter Bhagwan Birsa Munda, villages of Ukhrul District observed Jan Sunwai in 52 village Adi Sewa Kendras across all four Sub-Division of the district on 13th and 14th November 2025, together with the rest of the nation.
The Adi Sunwai is a participative programme coordinated through the block offices of the district administration to discuss aspirations of the villages and feedback which are collected by the respective block office for further consideration and action.
Birsa was born on 15 November 1875 and died on 9 June 1900 at the age of 24. Birsa was an Indian tribal independence activist, and folk hero who belonged to the Munda tribe. He spearheaded a tribal religious millenarian movement that arose in the Bengal Presidency (now Jharkhand) in the late 19th century, during the British Raj, thereby making him an important figure in the history of the Indian independence movement. The revolt mainly concentrated in the Munda belt of Khunti, Tamar, Sarwada and Bandgaon.
