Kuki CSO Working Committee, Ukhrul has strongly and unequivocally condemn the cowardly and unprovoked armed attack carried out by Tangkhul armed volunteers on innocent villagers of Mongkot Chepu at approximately 1:07 PM today.

The victims, including women, were peacefully engaged in routine agricultural activities at the Lengthei Mol farming area, located about 500-600 metres from the main residential settlement of the village, when they came under indiscriminate and targeted gunfire. The attackers reportedly fired from a hilltop position opposite Lilen, across the Thoubal River, deliberately endangering unarmed civilians.

One young girl has sustained a gunshot injury, and as of the time of issuing this statement, the firing is ongoing. More than 20 villagers, including women, remain trapped in the fields, exposed to life-threatening danger and unable to escape. This is a grave and inhumane act that amounts to a direct assault on civilian life and dignity.

This is not an isolated incident but part of a disturbing pattern of repeated, unprovoked attacks on innocent civilians by heavily armed Tangkhul volunteers. Such acts of violence are unacceptable, unlawful, and must be dealt with the utmost seriousness.

The situation is further aggravated by the severe risk posed to the general public. The ongoing firing places commuters along the Ukhrul highway in imminent danger, as stray bullets could strike passing vehicles and unsuspecting civilians, potentially leading to a wider tragedy.

We demand immediate and decisive intervention from the government and security agencies to:

1) Stop the ongoing firing without delay and ensure the safe rescue of all stranded villagers;

2) Secure the Ukhrul highway and surrounding areas to prevent civilian casualties

3) Launch urgent and thorough combing operations in identified locations, including Shikibung, S.Laho, and Sinakeithel to disarm all armed elements responsible for such acts of terror.

4) Ensure strict accountability and take exemplary action against those involved.

Failure to act swiftly will only embolden such perpetrators and further endanger innocent lives. The protection of civilians must not be compromised under any circumstances.

We stand in solidarity with the affected villagers and demand justice, safety, and immediate restoration of peace.
