Kuki CSO Condemns Coordinated Armed Assault on Mongkot Chepu

The Kuki CSO Working Committee Ukhrul has strongly condemned the coordinated and indiscriminate armed assault launched upon the civilian settlement of Mongkot Chepu on the evening of 26th May 2026, further exposing the alarming vulnerability of Kuki-Zo habitations in the fringe areas of Ukhrul and Kamjong districts.

The statement issued by the Department of Information and Media WCKCSOs-Ukhrul stated that “beginning at approximately 6:48 PM, civilian settlements of Mongkot Chepu came under a sustained attack from three directions-Leingangching (S. Laho), armed positions operating from the vicinity of Litan Sareikhong- Tangkhul Police station and the Sikibung- Lilen Ridge. The assault persisted with usage of mortars and other sophisticated weapons until approximately 11:08 PM, subjecting innocent civilians to prolonged terror and grave insecurity.

“This is not the first attack on Mongkot Chepu. The repeated targeting of civilian settlements reflects a dangerous pattern of emboldened aggression and systemic security failure. How long will vulnerable populations be expected to survive under recurring siege while security measures remain limited in their effectiveness against organised armed aggression? The responsibility squarely rests upon the State to equip and empower the Security Forces with an unambiguous operational mandate, devoid of political constraints, to decisively secure civilian habitations and prevent further escalation.

“The continued silence and inertia of the Government of Manipur and the Government of India are deeply disturbing. What exactly are the authorities waiting for? Must the Kuki-Zo population of Ukhrul and Kamjong face complete annihilation before meaningful action is taken?

“If the Government is unable to guarantee even minimum security to vulnerable Kuki civilians, it must state so with honesty and facilitate effective alternative arrangements. What is utterly indefensible, however, is remaining silent, passive, and administratively paralysed while civilian settlements repeatedly come under coordinated armed assault. Governance cannot remain mute in the face of organised violence.

“The growing perception that organised armed aggression against the minority Kuki-Zos is tolerated while institutional force is disproportionately asserted upon vulnerable minority communities risks severely eroding public trust in the neutrality and credibility of the State.

“If this neglect persists, the day may not be far when the Government is seen distributing ballistic vests and helmets to endangered civilians instead of securing their constitutional right to life and safety an outcome that would represent a profound failure of governance and a matter of national disgrace” added the statement of Kuki CSO Working Committee, Ukhrul.
