The Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO), Ukhrul expresses its outrage over the continued threats, violence, and inhumane conditions faced by students amidst the ongoing conflict in the region. The repeated targeting and endangerment of school-going children is not only deplorable but reflects a complete breakdown of basic human values and security assurances.
On March 24, 2026, a deeply disturbing incident occurred at Indira Gandhi Hill Flower School, where innocent school children and staff came under attack during the morning session. The attackers, identified as Tangkhul militants, had established bunkers merely 250 meters away from the school premises. The use of explosives and the firing of stray bullets into the school compound left both students and teachers severely traumatised. It must be noted that due to the prevailing crisis, the school had already been compelled to operate in two separate sessions owing to reduced student attendance and shortage of teaching staff. The attack during school hours underscores the blatant disregard for the safety of children.
On the same day, another shocking incident unfolded when students of Blossom English School, who were returning home after completing their one-month-long matriculation examinations, were ambushed en route between Tingpibung and Leplen by armed Tangkhul militants. These students, already under the stress of examinations, were subjected to life-threatening violence, further compounding the climate of fear and insecurity.
Despite reporting these incidents, we have been met with nothing but silence- no action, no assurance!
Following the March 24 attack, Indira Gandhi Hill Flower School was forced to shift its classes to the village church premises in an attempt to ensure the safety of its students. However, even this measure proved insufficient. On April 7, 2026, students returning from their morning classes were once again subjected to targeted firing, putting their lives at grave risk.
How many more such grave incidents must occur before decisive steps are taken? The apparent paralysis of the authorities only emboldens perpetrators and leaves innocent civilians, especially students, vulnerable. The deliberate or reckless endangerment of children’s lives must stop immediately.
We urge the concerned authorities to immediately:
-Ensure the safety and security for all schools and students.
-Remove militant presence near educational institutions
-Take stringent legal action against those responsible for these attacks.
“Our children deserve a peaceful and secure environment to learn and grow. The government must act decisively and without delay to uphold their fundamental right to education and safety” stated the statement issued by the Department of Information and Media Cell Kuki Students Organisation- Ukhrul
