Contradictory Statement & Action By The Government Of Manipur

2024: No Organisation Called Kuki-Zo-Council

2026: CM Called For A Meeting With Kuki-Zo-Council

The Government of Manipur, Directorate of Information & Public Relations on 18 December 2024 had issued a press release stating that “There Is No Organisation Called Kuki-Zo Council; Public Are Advised Not To Pay Heed”.

“The Government of Manipur would like to address to certain claims made by an organization identifying itself as the Kuki-Zo Council recently. Upon investigation, it has been found that no such organization exists in Manipur. The origin and authenticity of this group are highly questionable” stated the press release.

“The Government further urged the media fraternity, both national and local media houses, to refrain from giving publicity to such press releases from unauthorised organisations/individuals. The Central government and its agencies are also appealed to disregard such claims from unverified organisations” added the press release.

However, on 17 March 2026, the Office of the Chief Minister of Manipur has invited the Chairman and members of the Kuki-Zo-Council for a meeting on 21 March 2026 at Guwahati.

“I am directed to refer to the above subject and convey the request of the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Manipur to have a meeting with you and the other members of the Kuki Zo Council, on the 21st March, 2026 (Saturday) in Guwahati, Assam to discuss matters related to bringing back peace and normalcy in Manipur. A line of confirmation in this regard will be deeply appreciated” states the letter written by Secretary to Chief Minister, Manipur to Mr. Henlianthang Thanglet, Chairman, Kuki-Zo-Council.

The invitation to the Kuki-Zo Council for a meeting on March 21, 2026, starkly contradicts the December 18, 2024, declaration that “THERE IS NO ORGANISATION CALLED KUKI-ZO-COUNCIL; PUBLIC ARE ADVISED NOT TO PAY HEED.” This U-turn raises serious questions about the Government’s motives.
