The much awaited construction of rigid pavement with interlocking paver blocks and rigid pavement with thin white topping in Ukhrul Headquarters begins with a total sanction amounting to Rs. 24 Crore for a total length of 13.23km.
The work order was issued in June 2025. Divided into 8 Packages, the work is being implemented by 3 contractors. The concerned contractor has started laying of Granular Sub Base (GSB) at various locations at Ukhrul Headquarters.
According to the specification of the work, the width of the road is 12 feet maximum or less than that depending on the existing size of the road.
The construction of Rigid Pavement with interlocking Pavel Block will consist of layers of Granular Sub Base (GSB), Dry Lean Concrete (DLC), M-30 Concrete (3 inch) and Pavel Block.
The construction of Rigid Pavement with Thin White Topping will consist of layers of Granular Sub Base (GSB), Dry Lean Concrete (DLC) and thin white topping (M40 -6 inch).
The scarcity of water is a big challenge for the ongoing construction. Regulation of traffic movement at the ongoing work site requires active support and manning from the local authority including the police for the curing of the concrete to take place.
To maintain the quality of the work, the Executive Engineer of PWD Ukhrul, Garnish Kashung informed that their department has requested the National Institute of Technology, Manipur for requisition of required concrete mix design -M30 and M40 using locally available sand and aggregate. Moreover, the PWD Department has requested for testing of paver blocks as Mandatory Quality Control test for use in the construction of roads at Ukhrul District Headquarters.
