Border Fencing Gaining Momentum

The construction of border fencing along the India-Myanmar border is gaining momentum. According to sources, construction work of border fencing at Indo-Myanmar Pillar Number 82 is progressing.

In the past years, the locals have disputed that the current location of Pillar 82, has moved around 500 meters inside Indian territory. In contrast, a 2018 Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) statement called the reports of shifted pillars “baseless and unsubstantiated”.

The Government of India is taking up border fencing work along the 1,643-kilometer border to curb illegal activities. The move is being met with opposition from some ethnic groups, such as the Nagas and Mizos, who have historically had free movement across the border.

Not only fencing the Indo-Myanmar border, the Government of India has also ended the Free Movement Regime (FMR) that allowed people living near the border to travel up to 16 km into the other country without a visa.
