The Tangkhul Welfare Society, Guwahati (TWSG) has decided to cancel this year’s celebration of Luita Phanit – the seed sowing festival of the Naga and instead observed 14 February as a “Day of Fasting and Prayer for Peace”.

The decision was taken in view of the ongoing crisis that has left many homeless. The funds collected for the festival will be utilised for relief purposes to the affected victims.

In a public notice issued on Friday, the Tangkhul Welfare Society, Guwahati stated that, “an emergency sitting of the Tangkhul Welfare Society, Guwahati (TWSG), was held on 10 February 2026. The House unanimously resolved to cancel Luira Phanit 2026 in view of the ongoing crisis affecting our people in Litan and Sareikhong. The funds collected for the festival will be utilized for relief purposes to assist the affected victims.”

S. Supongmeren Jamir, MP Lok Sabha, was to attend as the Chief Guest.

The notice added “it was also resolved to observe 14 February 2026 as a Day of Fasting and Prayer for peace and healing under the initiative of TWSG, in solidarity with the affected families and the village community.”

Luira Phanit – the seed sowing festival is one of the most important traditional festivals of the Nagas in Manipur. The traditional festival is celebrated by the Nagas wherever they are. For the farmers, this festival marks the beginning of sowing seed and invoking the blessing of Creator for a bountiful harvest. In general, it is a new beginning to rejuvenate and to seek blessings from the Almighty.
