The All Manipur Muslim Students’ Organisation (AMMSO-GHQ) strongly condemn the racist killing of Anjel Chakma and demand immediate justice.
In a press release issued by President of AMMSO, Imtiyas Heibokmayum stated that, “we, the All Manipur Muslim Students’ Organisation (AMMSO), express our deepest anguish and strongest condemnation of the brutal and racially motivated assault that led to the tragic death of Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student from Tripura, in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. This horrific act has shaken us profoundly and stands as a grim reminder of the persistent racism, prejudice, and intolerance faced by students from the North-Eastern region and other marginalized communities in our country.
“We are deeply disturbed by reports that Anjel Chakma was subjected to racial and caste-based verbal abuse and was violently attacked for standing up against humiliation. After fighting for his life for over two weeks, he finally succumbed to his injuries. We firmly believe this was not an isolated incident but a deliberate hate crime and a grave failure of the system to protect vulnerable students. Racism that escalates into such violence is nothing short of murder.
“We assert that any delay or laxity in the investigation will only encourage further acts of hatred and injustice. We therefore demand a swift, transparent, and impartial investigation and insist that all those responsible, including anyone who aided, abetted, or attempted to shield the perpetrators, be brought to justice and punished in an exemplary manner. We also expect the authorities to take serious responsibility for ensuring the safety and dignity of students and to put effective measures in place to prevent such tragedies in the future.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of Anjel Chakma and stand firmly with them in their pain and grief. While no action can compensate for this irreparable loss, we believe that timely and decisive justice is the minimum moral and constitutional obligation owed to the family and to society.
“We call upon the Government of India, the Uttarakhand State Government, educational institutions, human rights bodies, student organisations, and civil society to treat this incident as a wake-up call and to act decisively against racism, hate speech, and discriminatory violence. As members of a democratic society, we cannot afford to normalize such brutality, nor can we remain silent in the face of injustice.
“We reaffirm that justice for Anjel Chakma is non-negotiable. We will continue to raise our voice and pursue all democratic means until accountability is ensured and every student can live and study with safety, dignity, and equality” added the press release.
