NPMHR's Statement On International Day Of Human Rights

The Naga People’s Movement For Human Rights (NPMHR) joins the global community in marking Human Rights Day 2025 under the theme โ€œHuman Rights, Our Everyday Essentials”.

It has released its statement which reads, “Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) marks the occasion of International Human Rights Day 2025 by drawing focus once again to the need to respect and uphold the values of human rights- Dignity, Equality, Justice and Freedom for all- as an “essential” to everyday existence. At this juncture where insecurity and violation of rights have crippled every layer of progress, it is all the more crucial to remember how rights shape our daily lives.

“While significant gains have been made, the Naga Peoples continue to have their basic rights to self determination denied. Tyrannical laws such as AFSPA of 1958 continue to be enforced in Naga areas. India’s unilateral scrapping of Free Movement Regime (FMR), a policy that has historical fact and relevance to the rights to livelihood of Nagas living along the imposed international borders of India and Myanmar, is indicative of the real- life impact of laws and policies that do not reflect the democratic aspirations of the people. The imposition of Protected/ Restricted Area Permit (PAP) has also compounded the difficulties.

“The NPMHR reminds the Government of India to revisit its commitment to Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) as a signatory country by repealing and revoking all laws and policies that impinges human rights and its values.”

The International Human Rights Day is celebrated around the world on 10 December every year. The date was chosen to honor the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption and proclamation, on 10 December 1948, of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
