Phungcham Yangreiram Bans Hunting & Trapping Of Birds & Animals For 5 Years

The office of the Phungcham, Paorei, Varangalai – Centre Mashunrum has banned hunting and trapping of birds and animals within the jurisdiction of Phungcham Yangreiram for a period of 5 years with immediate effect.

Phungcham, Paorei and Varangalai are located about 28 kilometres to the north of Ukhrul District, Manipur.

The decision was taken on 4 August 2025 at the half yearly assembly of Phungcham, Paorei, Varangalai -Centre Mashunrum, Vide Resolution No. VII.

The resolution stated that “hunting and trapping of birds and animals will be completely banned for 5 years within the jurisdiction of Phungcham Yangreiram. Therefore, anyone found carrying guns/airguns within the stated jurisdiction will be penalised with a fine of Rs.10,000 (Rupees Ten Thousand). The imposition will be effective from August 2025 till August 2030.”

Sorin Khaleng, Secretary of Phungcham, Paorei, Varangalai -Centre Mashunrum informed Rural Post that “the decision was taken to conserve, preserve, protect wildlife and to propagate the diminishing population of wildlife and to maintain ecological balance. The proclamation of banning hunting and trapping of birds and animals within the jurisdiction of Phungcham Yangreiram has also been served to the concerned village authorities that share boundaries with Phungcham Yangreiram. The villages are Hunphun, Halang, Talui, Hoomi, Peh, Lunghar, Loree Kaju, Kalhang and others.”

Phungcham is considered as one of the oldest Tangkhul villages. Paorei and Varangalai are the two hamlets and the three constitute Phungcham Yangreiram. Phungcham Yangreiram has a total of 1000 houses with a population of 6000 and above.
