The Raizan Long and Raizan Traders Association of Kamjong District on Wednesday carried out a joint road inspection along the stretch from Kamjong Headquarters to Huimine Thana – bordering Indo-Myanmar Pillar No.102 .
The said road measuring 32 kilometres is constructed by Bhartia Infra Projects Ltd (BIPL), a leading infrastructure development company in North-East India.
Pharipam Shithung, President of Raizan Traders Association while interacting with the media persons informed that “the 32 kilometres of road is being constructed by BIPL in 2019 funded by North East Council (NEC). This road is very vital for the people of Kamjong District. However, the BIPL in spite of the remaining period for maintenance have abandoned the road and left to the villagers to maintain it. Due to landslide and non maintenance of the road, there is an increase in motor accidents. It is also worth mentioning that many refugees are being given temporary shelter at Huimine Thana. The poor road condition has also made it impossible to give timely medical care to those who are sick to the people including those in the refugee camp. Disease outbreak due to the rainy season is only adding woe to the refugees as well as the locals.”
“We have given multiple representations to the concerned authority but we are yet to see any positive response. We want the concerned authority to pay heed to our appeals. This year, the monsoon arrived very early in Kamjong District and the incessant rain has caused landslides at various places. The road from Kamjong Headquarters to Huimine Thana is our lifeline, rice, fuel, livestock and other essential commodities are imported from this route. This route is being used for trading with the neighbouring villages. The blockade of the road due to landslides has greatly affected our day to day affairs. We have been maintaining the road with our limited resources and through the help of Assam Rifles. There has been no assistance from the Government or department so far. If the concerned authority continues this treatment we will be compelled to take up democratic means of agitation” added Pharipam Shithung.
A massive landslide about 150 feet in length near the 8 Assam Rifles Post at Nambisha has cut off the vehicular movement of the road connecting Kamjong Headquarters to the villages in the border areas like Huimine Thana, Phaiko, Skipe and Pilong. The road could be open only when a machinery was deployed to clear the debris for a limited vehicular movement. There is a very high probability of landslides with more rain and two structures at the top belonging to Assam Rifles are also likely to collapse along with the landslides.
This road is the lifeline for the people of Kamjong District as it serves as a route for trade and other livelihood activities.
According to Shimthar Kamodang, Headman of Ramphoi village “the landslide started in the month of May 2025 due to the incessant rain. Villagers have been maintaining the road by carrying out small repairs for the past few years. But due to the huge landslide this year, it has become impossible for the villagers to maintain the task.”
Vatan Duidang, Vice President of Raizan Long stated that “around 100 vehicles are plying this very road everyday. The landslide has created untold miseries and inconvenience to the commuters. We seek the attention of concern authority for immediate intervention at the earliest.”
The villagers informed that the drainage along the road is yet to be constructed. Due to the absence of proper drainage, the road is wearing off day by day by the water logging
