The Working Committee, UNC expresses its deepest outrage and condemnation on the coldblooded ambush of Naga civilians carried out by the suspected Kuki militants on the evening of 13th May 2026 between Joujangtek village and Longsai-1, wherein Mr. Wilson Thanga (55), S/o Late D. Waikan of Dolang Chiru Village, was killed, and Mr. Olive Jatung (34) and Mrs. Aroma Thanga (33) were critically injured and are under medical treatment. On the fateful evening, the victims were returning from funeral rites at Dolang Chiru village and proceeding to Leimatak fields around 5:30 PM when their vehicle came under sudden gunfire from the Joujangtek side of the road. This was an ambush on unarmed civilians. Despite being struck in the waist, Mr. Olive Jatung drove 2 km on a punctured Tyre to Longsai Tubung and saved lives. Mr. Wilson Thanga died in the vehicle.
The Working Committee of UNC stated that “this incident is not an isolated case. It is a calculated and coordinated attacks on the Nagas by warmongering marauders with unfounded claims and political ambitions. The Naga people view this incident seriously and shall not remain as mute spectators to such continued aggressions.”
Therefore, the UNC demands:
I. Immediate Justice: Immediate and impartial investigation for identification and arrest of the assailants through a time-bound process.
II. Accountability: The Govt. of Manipur should hold accountability over the unfolding situations and take concrete steps for restoration of peace and stability.
III. Security: Deployment of state security forces along vulnerable routes/areas from Loktak project to Noney under Tamenglong district and other vulnerable areas of Nagas to prevent recurrence.
“Any further delay in delivering tangible justice would be a grave dereliction of the State’s duty. This cycle of impunity shall be crushed without delay, or the consequences for peace and order in Naga areas will be irreversible.
“Through this statement we reach out to the Chiru people and the bereaved family of Late Wilson Thanga with our heartfelt condolence . We stand in solidarity with them in this time of immeasurable grief and great loss. May the soul of Wilson Chiru rest in Peace” added the statement issued by the Media Cell, Working Committee, UNC
