The United Naga Council (UNC) has strongly condemned the abduction and inhuman torture inflicted upon Th. Merangsing Charanga of Choktong Village on 1 September 2025 by the People’s Defence Force. Th. Merangsing Charanga was released on 3 September 2025 after a third-degree torture.

In a statement released by the information & Publicity Cell of United Naga Council stated that, “the United Naga Council (UNC) is greatly disturbed to learn of the abduction and inhuman torture inflicted upon Th. Merangshing Charanga, an innocent Naga villager of Choktong village on 1st September 2025 by the People’s Defence Force (PDF).

“The fugitives who are being sheltered in Manipur along the Indo-Myanmar villages since November 2023 after the fall of Thanan in Myanmar’s Sagaing region have created unbearable hardships to the Naga villagers of the areas where they have been given temporary shelter. At stake is the survival of the down trodden denizens triggering a series of adverse impacts on the livelihood, security and wellbeing of the native inhabitants.

“The third-degree torture and mental harassment inflicted continuously till his release on 3 September 2025 without any reason is condemned in the strongest measure. Unleashing a reign of terror under the very nose of the law enforcing agencies along the border areas and whose continued failure to respond effectively to all vices committed by the fugitives and PDF is highly questionable.

“The UNC condemns the abduction of the innocent victim, the use of physical and psychological torture to coerce the victim into admitting crimes and for extracting information. We stand in solidarity with the victim and the family and call upon the Government and its law enforcing agencies to take up swift action to apprehend the culprits and also appeal to civil society organisations to join us in condemning these heinous abuses.”

UNC also warned that “If the culprits are not booked at the earliest and justice is delivered to the victim, the UNC will not remain a silent spectator and shall be compelled to take up fitting actions from our end.”
