The Working Committee of the United Naga Council (UNC) is appalled by the inaction and complacency of the state and central governments, which is seen as a step-motherly treatment towards the Nagas. UNC has questioned the rationale behind the alarming government’s policy in letting loose the Kuki militants to wage war on Naga people. UNC has also questioned the position of the government on the prolonged road blocked enforced by the Kukis along the National Highway leading to Ukhrul.
The press release stated “the Working Committee, United Naga Council (WC, UNC) has been keenly observing the unceasing and unprovoked attacks on the Naga villages; Litan, Shangkhai, Sinakeithei, Sarkarphung and Thoyee, Ukhrul District, ever since February 7, 2026 by the Kukis and suspected Kuki militants under Soo, using sophisticated weapons which causes panic and unrest to the villagers raising a grave concern. It is indeed, shocking to learn the indiscriminate firing unleashed by the Kuki Militants in the evening of Easter, April 5, 2026, from 6-11 pm, defiling the solemnity and sanctity of the holy Easter and leaving villagers in panic is abominable and unacceptable in Christian’s domain.
“The attack, which saw volleys of bullets piercing six residential buildings, is a clear example of the Kuki militants’ continued aggression against the Naga people. Despite the Naga village guard’s restraint, the Kuki militants have been orchestrating a proxy war against the Nagas suspiciously under the patronization of the state machineries.
“The WC, UNC is appalled by the inaction and complacency of the state and central governments, which is seen as a step-motherly treatment towards the Nagas. The position of the government on the prolonged road blocked enforced by the Kukis along the National Highway leading to Ukhrul is highly questionable. How and why the government could not tackle to ensure the safe passage for all travelers in that short stress about 3 Km. when the state have been hosting the highest ever number of security forces in the history.
“The rationale behind the alarming government’s policy in letting loose the Kuki militants to wage war on Naga people should be questioned by the entire right thinking citizen in the country. This raises serious concerns about the government’s role in protecting its citizens, putting the lives and properties of Nagas at stake.
“The WC, UNC has been advocating for peaceful coexistence, but continued provocations in the ancestral domains of the Nagas have offended the Nagas beyond extreme. We remind everyone that “A threat to one Naga on the issue of land and identity is a threat to all the Nagas”. Our patient and restraint should not be misconstrued as weakness by all concerns.”
Regarding the leveling an accusation of hate speech against Rev. Ramyothing Phungshok, Pastor of Sinakeithei Baptist Church, one of the affected Naga villages, the WC, UNC observes that the accusation is completely unfounded and one-sided. The former has merely echoed the sentiments of the Naga youngsters, and his statements were devoid of any inflammatory tone. Such acts of intimidation and targeting individual will not silence the voices of the Naga people.
We demand the government:
a) Immediate action against Kuki militants for terrorizing the Naga villagers
b) Increased security measures for the affected villages by deployment of state forces
c) Government should ensure safety and security for all travelers along the highways, especially, NH-202 Imphal to Ukhrul.
d) Accountability for the state and central governments inaction and malafide policy
“The WC, UNC will continue to work towards the rights and dignity of the Naga people and if the government fails to protect the safety and security of the citizen, the Naga people may take their own course of actions to protect our people and our land at any cost’ stated the press release issued by the Media Cell, Working Committee, UNC.
