On 6 July 2026, at around 01:40PM, the convoy of 40 Assam Rifles was ambushed at Makae, Hungpung, Ukhrul near Lungshang Kong. Two personnel of Assam Rifles succumbed to their injuries from the attack. It is learnt that the Assam Rifles has filed a complaint for registering an FIR at Ukhrul Police Station. Accordingly, an FIR No. 7 (7)2026 UKL-PS has been registered at Ukhrul Police Station under UAPA and Arms Act.
According to sources, the Assam Rifles of Shangshak Battalion were on its return journey from Sector Headquarters, Somsai. Approximately at around 01:40PM, the convoy was attacked by “anti-national elements” from the adjacent dominating heights.
The Assam Rifles reacted with retaliatory fire. Additional reinforcement reached the spot and carried out retaliatory fire, the gunfight stopped at around 04:00PM.
During the attack, WO (GD) Balwant Singh and Hav (GD) Chandra Mohan Singh sustained fatal injuries and were evacuated to Unit Hospital at Shangshak. The two succumbed to their injuries. Ukhrul Police informed that the two bodies were taken to RIMS Imphal for post mortems. An autopsy was conducted on 7 July 2026 at JNIMS Imphal.
A forensic team from Imphal has also visited the spot and carried out necessary investigation on Tuesday.
So far no one has claimed responsibility for the attack. Meanwhile, NSCN has issued a statement on 6 July 2026, denying any involvement in the attack where MIP-NSCN/GPRN had issued a statement stating that “[t]he NSCN/GPRN reiterates that it shall never resort to any action that could undermine, derail, or sabotage the ongoing Indo-Naga political negotiations.”
