The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Ukhrul on 17 November 2025 organised a Legal Awareness Programme at Somdal, Ukhrul District, Manipur.
The legal awareness programme focused on the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007. The programme was organised in collaboration with District Social Welfare Department Ukhrul and Somdal Village Authority.
More than 250 local residents attended the awareness programme held at Vaomalan Hall, Somdal. The resource person, Chief Legal Aid Defence Counsel (LADC) Ld, S. Worthing, elaborated on the “Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007”.
He advocated that the Act legally obligated children and relatives to provide for their old parents. The key provisions covered by him were maintenance and obligations of children and relatives, tribunals, who implement and enforced, protection of property owned by parents/senior citizens, the need of old age homes, medical care for senior citizens, etc. He further emphasised that failure to comply with maintenance orders can result in penalties.
Resource person, Mrs Angel A Shishak, MRW, Social Welfare Department Ukhrul, spoke on the topic “Poverty Elevation Schemes under Social Welfare Department”. She highlighted the details about various National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP) under Social Welfare Department like Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension scheme (IGNOAPS), Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension (IGNWPS), Indira Gandhi National Disability Pension Scheme (IGNDPS), National Family Benefit Scheme (NFBS) Annapurna Scheme etc.
Ms Aching Lungran Chingmila, OA, Social Welfare Department Ukhrul assisted 30 senior citizens with their on-the-spot verification for both Old Age Pensioners and Widow Pensioners.
