Dear Home Minister, It Was A Cross-border Aggression

Apropos to the Indian Express “No foreign aggression in Kamjong attack’: Manipur Home Minister G Konthoujam” dated 10 May 2026, certain facts must be clarified.

A delegation of ruling party legislators led by Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam visited the three affected villages -Choro, Wanglee and Namlee to assess the situation on 9 May 2026. These border villages were attacked by armed militants in the early morning of 7 May 2026.

The Kamjong Police had received the information of the attack at 04:30am on 7 May 2026 that “on 7 May 2026 at about 3:30am some unknown armed miscreants suspected to be KNA (B) (Kuki National Army, Burma) numbering about 50/60 holding sophisticated firearms came to Choro village, Kamjong district by crossing Indo-Myanmar border (IMB) and carried out terrorist attacks using sophisticated weapons, explosive and dropping bombs through drones. As a result of which, 21 (twenty-one) numbers of houses were completely burnt down and some villagers got injured. Hence the Suo moto case under FIR No. 05 (05) 2026/CSD-PS.”

As the Home Minister of the state and considering the gravity of the attack, the Suo moto case report should have reached the Home Minister at the earliest reasonable time. On the other hand, the Home Minister had stated “Foreign aggression was not mentioned in the report submitted to the government,” as reported by the Indian Express.

This is contrary to the report of multiple eye witnesses who had pointed out that the attackers came from Myanmar side and retreated to their base at Myanmar after the attack where they had looted shops and homes, burnt down houses and escaped on vehicles stolen from the villagers at the border.

Now the question is on what basis has the Home Minister come out with such a statement having visited the area and interacted with the villagers. He heard the stories of the people, their apprehensions and hope for peace.

“What the Home Minister said is very disappointing. I hope he was misquoted. Otherwise, his visit would be a mere lip service” stated a villager from the border.

Did the Suo moto case failed to reach him? Or is the Home Minister relying on information or direction from outside? The incident happened in Kamjong District and falls under the jurisdiction of Kamjong Police, reasonable expectation is that the Home Minister should have relied on information from ground zero.

And one of the damning reports would be a video from a member of the security force where he was describing in Hindi that the entire village of Choro had been destroyed by KNA from Burma.

MLA of 43 Phungyar AC, Leishiyo Keishing had also asserted that it was an attack by militants from across the border. Was the Home Minister not taking the local representative seriously?

The involvement of KNA-B or other militants group can be ascertained only after thorough investigation. But, there is no doubt that the attackers were from Myanmar. The armed militants came from Myanmar and it was a coordinated attack right under the nose of security forces stationed at the Indo-Myanmar borders. They came from Myanmar, dropped bombs, fired guns, looted things, burnt houses and went back to Myanmar without a single response from the security forces guarding the border. Eyewitnesses informed that the Assam Rifles stationed at Aloyo, about a few metres reached Choro at around 07:00am, when all the damages were done and the attackers left with the loot.

“Foreign Aggression” is written all over the information received so far from ground zero. Therefore, for the Home Minister to say that it was otherwise seems to be missing the entire story.  We cannot talk about justice without fixing accountability.
