Due to a situation where there could lead to breach of peace and public tranquility, the District Magistrate of Ukhrul, Asish Das (IAS) has issued a prohibitory order in the whole area of Litan with immediate effect.

The order reads “as per report from reliable source there is an apprehension that could lead to breach of peace and public tranquility at Litan village between the two community i. e. Tangkhul and Kuki.

“Whereas, such disturbances could lead to serious breaches of peace and danger to public tranquility, and pose risks to human lives and property;

“And whereas, the current circumstances necessitate immediate action, rendering the service of notice impractical;

“Now, therefore, I, Asish Das, District Magistrate, Ukhrul, exercising the; powers conferred upon me under Sub-Section 1 of Section 163 of the BNSS, 2023, do hereby issue an order prohibiting the movement of any person outside their respective residences and any other act or activity that may disturb the prevailing law and order in the Scheduled area from 7:00 PM on 8.02.2026 until further orders.”

This decree shall not be applicable to Government officials and security personnel on duty.

The District Magistrate of Ukhrul has also requisitioned the services of 4 columns of Assam Rifles, 2 additional Coys of Central Armed Police Force (CAPF), 4 columns of 8 Bihar Regiment and 4th Mahar Regiment for maintaining law and order and restoring overall security and well being of the area.

Meanwhile, Katho Katamnao Long (KKL) had informed the Kuki Students Organisation (KSO), Ukhrul to retract their press release which had misrepresented facts that had further added to the tension at Litan Sareikhong.

The Kuki Students Organisation (KSO), Ukhrul has issued a press release stating that “it is important to place on record that the incident originated from a minor altercation involving a few intoxicated individuals from both villages. The matter was already being addressed peacefully and customarily through the established village authority of Litan Sareikhong in consultation with the family of the injured person. “

However, the Katho Katamnao Long (KKL) has outrightly rejected the statement of KSO, saying that no such step has been taken to rectify the situation. Katho Katamnao Long has directed the KSO to retract the wrong statement. Lies should not be used to cover up in the pretext of de-escalating the situation.

According to reports, on the night of Saturday (7 February 2026) a group of Kuki assaulted a Tangkhul Naga guy at Litan. The incident happened when Sterling, a Tangkhul Naga guy lit his torch towards a group of people when he heard voices; the group of people who turned out to be Kukis retaliated by beating him up grievously on the pretext that the light directly fell on their faces.

The Katho Katamnao Long and Kuki Students Organisation has appealed for communal harmony.

Harassment and assault of travellers and passersby along the stretch of Litan and neighbouring areas are not rare. It is worth mentioning that on 26th June, 2025, Ukhrul bound winger driver and its passengers were assaulted at Mongkot Chepu. An undertaking was executed between Tangkhul leaders and Kuki chiefs from the area on 28th June 2025 at Litan Police Station to diffuse the situation.
