Kohima Press Club Celebrates 25th Anniversary

The Kohima Press Club (KPC) celebrated its 25th anniversary under the theme “Traversing 25 Years of Storytelling: Inspiring the Future” on Tuesday at Capital Convention Centre, Kohima.

Dr. Neiphiu Rio, Chief Minister of Nagaland and Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty, President, Press Club of India attended the celebration as special guests.

Chief Minister of Nagaland, Dr. Neiphiu Rio while congratulating the Kohima Press Club stated, “it is a very important milestone in the history of Nagaland State.”

He recalled the “Naga Messenger” which was launched and circulated in Makokchung in 1933. “With people centric reporting, KPC has shaped the society. I appeal to the journalists to remain centred to the truth. Be a beacon of hope, fearless and responsible journalism” added Dr. Neiphiu Rio.

Dr. Neiphiu Rio unveiled the commemorative plaque and released the celebration souvenir.

Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty, President, Press Club of India in her remarks, stated that, “practising journalism is not easy, we face numerous challenges.” She called for effective journalism and journalistic freedom for a healthy democracy, setting up of Legal Cell to help those journalists who are fighting legal battle and for organising free workshop and training for journalists to keep up with the technology. “Support independent media not only by sharing, but also through finance” she added.

The speakers of the Northeast Media Conclave of the first session Monalisa Changkija (Nagaland), Pradip Phanjoubam (Manipur), Geetartha Pathak (Indian Journalists Union), Karma Paljor (Sikkim) and Raymond Kharmujai (Meghalaya) deliberated on the topic -“Evolving nature of Media: Ethics under pressure and strengthening credibility in the age of misinformation”. Medolenuo Ambrocia Loucu moderated the session.

In the 2nd session, speakers Vanlalrema Vantawl (Mizoram), Utpal Parashar (Assam), Ranju Dodum (Arunachal Pradesh) and Debraj Deb (Tripura) deliberated on the topic “Journalism as peace work: Navigating divides, building bridges and a stronger media ecosystem for Northeast”. Dhiren Sadokpam moderated the second session.

The occasion was also attended by Achumbemo Kikon (MLA – Secretary General of NPF) Kekhrielhoulie Yhome (MLA -Advisor School Education and State Council of Educational Research and Training, Nagaland), Abu Mehta ( Advisor to Nagaland’s Chief Minister), DC of Kohima and SP of Kohima among others
